By the time you've compressed the image down to a JPG, a lot of data has been thrown away. Whether or not you'll miss seeing that data in the final print depends on dozens of variables. Not least in that list are the software/driver you're using, the printer, the ink (or other process), the paper, and what may or may not need to be done to make the image file scale to the output you're creating.Generally, if you've got the image looking just right in a format that contains more color depth, you can render from that a JPG that will print very nicely. But if you feel the need to go back in for some more editing, you do NOT want to have to go back in and edit a JPG.

Always go back to the RAW file, or the DNG, etc., where you still have the latitude necessary to avoid ugly editing artifacts. Then create a new JPG for display or for sending to your lab once you're happy with the changes. It will help if you mention the sort of prints you make, and how you make them (or have them made by someone else). It is exactly as Matt points out.I'd only add that the RAW type image is somewhat analogous to a film negative (and dng files will perhaps be more universally readable 10 years from now than a CR2 file from an older model Canon EOS digitial, for example).It's not that you get a better print or product from a RAW format, it's rather that many different images/products can be 'pulled' off from the RAW original. A jpg is like a print in that it has already been manipulated and had data lost in the process.
